The Appellate Practice Section is devoted to enhancing the standards of practice before the state and federal courts of appeal. We sponsor presentations aimed at improving all aspects of oral and written advocacy, and educating practitioners about appellate procedures. The Section provides opportunities for bench and bar to meet and discuss appropriate topics of mutual interest. The Section regularly sponsors events at the State Bar Conventions on issues of appellate procedure and practice, as well as topics of substantive law.
The Section has taken care to ensure topics specific to Utah are covered regularly and in-depth. It has arranged presentations by judges newly appointed to the Court of Appeals, and new Supreme Court Justices. More importantly, it has put together regular programs on changes in appellate rules. Although the Section tries to advance the use of appellate specialists, it is important that trial lawyers understand the rules of appellate procedure, particularly as many trial lawyers prefer to retain cases through appeal. Please contact any members of the Executive Committee if you have any questions regarding the Section or suggestions on CLEs.
